Why Top Strategy Leaders See What Others Miss

Pedro Vaz Paulo: Executive Coaching & Strategy Consulting for Leaders > Leadership > Why Top Strategy Leaders See What Others Miss

A written account describes a closed-door seminar at London Business School on October 15, 2023, where organisers introduced Professor Anya Sharma as a renowned business strategist and author from the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad. Her challenge to a familiar boardroom habit was simple and sharp.

The best strategy leaders do not just analyze data. They build a mental framework that changes what they notice and why it matters. Over time, that habit compounds because perception shapes capital allocation, hiring decisions, and partnership choices.

How top strategy leaders avoid blind spots

Sharma’s point aligns with the tradition of competitive strategy shaped by Michael Porter, whose work has influenced modern strategy teaching and practice. What others miss is rarely a secret. It is usually a signal hidden in plain sight. Porter created the Five Forces analysis to help leaders assess industry structure, competitive pressure, and the sources of profitability. Used well, the framework pushes teams to look beyond internal performance and ask harder questions about rivals, substitutes, new entrants, and bargaining power. It also reinforces a disciplined view of advantage. As Porter wrote in Harvard Business Review, “the essence of strategy is choosing a unique and valuable position,” supported by a system of activities that is difficult to copy.

When good plans become blind spots

The strongest leaders treat that discipline as a starting point. They still use traditional planning, budgets, and performance reviews to drive execution, but they refuse to confuse operational improvement with strategy. They test assumptions, explore counterfactuals, and trace second and third-order consequences so blind spots surface early. They also recognize a risk in any tool. When a model becomes a comfort blanket, it can narrow perception. Great strategy leaders keep the framework, then keep looking. Strong strategists consistently see what standard reporting often misses by combining disciplined frameworks with ongoing questioning and second-order thinking.

Why early signal vision defines leadership now

The cost of missing signals is measurable. McKinsey reports that about 70% of transformations fail, often because organisations misread early risks or respond too slowly. Across markets, rapid change raises the stakes, so small planning gaps compound. Closing them requires repeatable decision routines. PepTalk connects organisations with expert speakers who help teams turn strategy ideas into practical routines. In practice, PepTalk speakers and business consulting speakers help leadership teams translate concepts such as the Five Forces, scenario planning, and assumption testing into a shared language, establish debate norms, and define decision rituals. The goal is not a perfect prediction. The payoff is earlier recognition, faster alignment, and choices that hold up under changing conditions. This discipline helps leaders detect what others miss before it shows up in results.
